A Little Rain Never Hurt
By Mercedes Santana
The day began with my second photographer and I arriving at the venue at noon sharp and it was POURING rain.
While some might see rain on a wedding day as a challenge, I see it as an opportunity to capture unique and beautiful moments. Don’t get me wrong. Rain definitely can make things a little bit more hectic. The mud, the wet equipment, the frizzy hair… But as a photographer, I've learned that weather can add a layer of whimsy and emotion to photos and with the right preparation, rain can become an ally rather than an obstacle.
Seaside Farms is truly a hidden gem. Nestled on the shores of Kachemak Bay, this charming location features cozy cabins and a secluded campsites, all with breathtaking views of the Bay and surrounding mountains. As we made our way to the farm, I couldn't help but appreciate the serene beauty of the landscape, even under the cover of rain clouds. The lush greenery and vibrant colors of the fireweed provided a stunning backdrop for Shawn and Shannon's special day.
One of the keys to being a successful wedding photographer is preparation. Knowing that the weather in Alaska can be unpredictable, I always come equipped with clear umbrellas, which not only protect my gear but also make for some whimsical and romantic photos. It's these little details that can make all the difference in capturing the essence of a couple's wedding day, no matter the weather.
Now let’s talk about our bride and groom. Sean and Shannon are the epitome of an Alaskan couple. Their love story is deeply intertwined with their shared passion for the great outdoors. They kayak, hike, hunt, and fish together, embodying the adventurous spirit that defines so many who call Alaska home. Watching them embrace the rainy weather with such joy and enthusiasm was a testament to their deep connection with nature and each other.
As the day unfolded, the rain continued to fall, but Sean and Shannon were unfazed. They were surrounded by their closest family and friends, some of whom had traveled all the way from New Zealand to share in this joyous occasion. The sense of community and love was palpable, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere despite the chilly weather.
As the ceremony time approached, almost as if on cue, the rain began to taper off, and the clouds parted just enough to reveal a stunning peekaboo view of the ocean in front of us. It was as if nature itself was celebrating with us, providing a breathtaking backdrop for Sean and Shannon to exchange their vows.
Standing there, surrounded by vibrant fireweed and the awe-inspiring beauty of Kachemak Bay, Shawn and Shannon promised their lives to each other. It was a moment of pure magic, one that I felt honored to capture through my lens. The love and happiness radiating from the couple were infectious, and I could see that everyone present felt it too.
My favorite moment was when instead of sparklers or bubbles, the newly weds walked back down the aisle hand in hand while the guests threw fireweed petals. Truly an Alaskan touch!
With the ceremony complete it was time to eat food and be merry! The reception was held in a beautifully decorated tent, where guests were treated to delicious food, heartfelt speeches, plenty of laughter and a surprise performance from Atz Kilcher, a family friend of theirs.
The celebration continued late into the night, with music, dancing, and a sense of joy that filled the air. Sean and Shannon's wedding wasn't just a celebration of their love; it was a testament to the power of community, nature, and the bonds that connect us all.
Photographing this wedding was an absolute joy and a reminder of why I love what I do. Each wedding is a unique story, filled with moments of love, laughter, and sometimes unexpected surprises—like a rain that turns into a beautiful evening. These are the moments that make life truly special, and I'm so grateful to have been a part of Sean and Shannon's journey.
Thank you for taking the time to share in this adventure with me. If you're planning a wedding and looking for a photographer who can capture the magic of your special day, rain or shine, I'd love to hear from you!
