Off-the-Trail Elopements: 5 Hidden Gem Spots to Say "I Do" in Alaska

By Mercedes Santana

If you're searching for the best places to elope in Alaska, you're probably picturing dramatic mountain views, glacier-fed lakes, and untouched wilderness. Alaska is one of the most unforgettable elopement locations for couples who crave something off-the-beaten-path—and trust me, it doesn’t get more epic than this. But what if you took it one step further—off the main trail and into the heart of the wild? Alaska is full of stunning, lesser-traveled locations just off popular hiking trails that offer jaw-dropping views and total intimacy for your big moment. As a wedding and elopement photographer who's slightly obsessed with the backcountry, here are six of my favorite off-the-trail spots for adventurous couples ready to say “I do” in the most epic way possible.

Note: Most of the photos in this blog were taken on my iPhone… some of them, the OLD iPhones. So, honestly, if they look amazing there, imagine how they would look in person OR with a real camera!!

1. Skilak Lake Lookout – Where the Forest Meets the Sky

If you're dreaming of a backdrop that includes shimmering blue water and dense boreal forest, Skilak Lake Lookout is your spot. A moderate trail off Skilak Lake Road leads to an incredible overlook—but if you venture just a bit off the beaten path near the top, there’s a quiet mossy clearing with views that’ll take your breath away (in the best way).

Perfect for: Couples who want huge views without a huge hike.

2. Reed Lakes – Turquoise Dreams in Hatcher Pass

Reed Lakes is hands down one of the most photogenic alpine locations in Southcentral Alaska. Picture this: two glacier-fed lakes, steep rocky cliffs, and wildflowers galore in summer. But here’s the real gold—just before you reach the Upper Reed Lake, there are secluded rock ledges perfect for a private ceremony. They overlook the entire valley and feel like your own private slice of Alaska heaven.

Best season: Late July to early September, when everything is lush and the lakes are fully thawed.

3. Crystal Lake at Crow Pass – A Fairytale Reflection Spot

Crow Pass is known for its rugged beauty, but Crystal Lake—a small alpine lake off the main trail—is a hidden oasis. It's nestled in the Chugach Mountains, just past Girdwood. When the water is still, it mirrors the surrounding peaks like something out of a dream. There's a sweet little peninsula just off the trail that’s perfect for an intimate elopement ceremony and there’s a cabin there that you can rent out that is literally the cutest thing you’ve ever seen.

Bonus: If you’re into wildlife, keep an eye out for mountain goats on the cliffs above. That pic I did happen to have my real camera with me!! Oh! And there’s a glacier!

4. Ptarmigan Lake Trail- A Hidden Gem near Moose Pass

Nestled near the charming town of Moose Pass, the Ptarmigan Lake Trail is a dreamy escape into alpine serenity. This moderately easy trail winds through spruce forests and along a glacier-fed stream before revealing a stunning turquoise lake cradled by rugged peaks. Just off the main trail, there are several flat clearings along the shoreline—ideal for a quiet, lakeside elopement with unreal reflections and peaceful vibes. I took my camera with me on this hike!

Why it’s perfect: It’s accessible, scenic, and far enough off the radar to feel like your own secret spot.

5. Wolverine Peak - Anchorage’s Own Backyard

You don’t have to go far from the city to find elopement-worthy wilderness. Wolverine Peak offers a challenging hike just outside of Anchorage. You can go all the way up to the top or about three-quarters of the way up, there's a secret grassy ridge that looks out over the city, Cook Inlet, and the surrounding mountain range. It's a wind-swept, magical place to exchange vows—especially at golden hour.

Local tip: Hit up Moose’s Tooth afterward for a celebratory pizza and pint.

Legal Stuff: How to Legally Elope in Alaska

Wondering how to legally elope in Alaska? The process is refreshingly simple even if you’re from out of state —one reason so many couples choose this wild state for their intimate ceremony. Whether you're planning a small wedding in Alaska or a private trail-side vow exchange, here's what you need to know:

1. Marriage License
Apply here. There’s a mandatory 3-day waiting period, so plan ahead. It is valid for 90 days.

2. Cost
A marriage license costs $60.

3. Two Witnesses
I, as your photographer, would count as one!

4. Officiants
A religious officiant, judge, or even a friend ordained online (e.g., Universal Life Church) can officiate.

A Few Tips to Keep It Fun (and Safe!)

  • Pack in, pack out – Leave no trace. Even flower petals can be harmful in some environments.

  • Dress in layers – The weather changes quickly, especially at elevation.

  • Bring snacks and water – You’re adventuring, after all!

  • Consider a weekday elopement – Fewer crowds, more privacy.

  • Hire a local photographer (hey, hi 👋) who knows the trails, the light, and how to keep things feeling easy and fun.

Final Thoughts

Eloping off-trail in Alaska is more than just saying your vows—it's about sharing an experience that reflects your wild, adventurous love. Whether you’re perched on a rocky ledge overlooking a glacier or standing barefoot by a mossy alpine lake, these locations offer something unforgettable.

And the best part? You don’t need a crowd to make it meaningful. Just you, your love, and Alaska doing her thing.
